Lawyers representing Dr. Kizza Besigye have petitioned the General Court Martial to allow Eron Kiiza, a defence team member currently serving a nine-month sentence for contempt of court, to participate in legal proceedings. Lead Counsel Martha Karua emphasized that Kiiza’s absence undermines the right to legal representation.

“Each lawyer has a defined role in this defence, and Kiiza’s incarceration affects our strategy. His absence compromises our ability to represent our clients effectively,” Karua argued.
The defence team also expressed concerns about intimidation since Kiiza’s conviction, panel member changes without proper identification, and restrictions on vehicle access.
Presiding officer Brigadier Robert Freeman Mugabe rejected the motion, stating, “A convicted person cannot participate in court activities.” He affirmed that the remaining lawyers, numbering over 30, were sufficient for the accused’s defence.
The case, involving charges of illegal possession of firearms, continues amid a backdrop of heightened security and legal contestations over the court’s jurisdiction.
