Veteran singer Betina Namukasa, best known for her hit song “Emikisa Gya Bakazi,” has raised concerns about the current state of the Ugandan music industry, highlighting the decline of meaningful lyrics as a major factor. Namukasa, who was a member of the successful Da Nu Eagles group, criticized the prevailing trend in which contemporary music often lacks substance and meaningful content.

In a recent interview, Namukasa expressed her frustration, pointing out that many music enthusiasts today no longer prioritize songs with meaningful lyrics. Instead, they gravitate toward tracks that focus on inappropriate themes, which, she argues, detracts from the true essence of music. “These days, there is a tendency of people not paying attention to music with meaningful lyrics, but when someone comes up with a song full of inappropriate lyrics, you find it trending all over,” Namukasa lamented.
According to the former Da Nu Eagles member, this shift in musical preference is threatening the long-term growth and sustainability of the Ugandan music industry. She emphasized that artists who strive to produce content with a positive message or social value are often overlooked or underappreciated. Namukasa’s comments serve as a call to action for both music lovers and industry players to refocus on the importance of lyrical depth in maintaining a healthy and thriving music scene.
