Bobi Wine Calls for Compassion and Release of Political Prisoners During Christmas Celebrations.

Kampala, Uganda – In a poignant address during Christmas celebrations at St. Mary’s Cathedral RubagaRobert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, urged the public to show compassion towards political prisoners and called for their release. The event, presided over by Kampala Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere, provided a platform for the National Unity Platform (NUP) leader to highlight the plight of those he described as “innocent victims of political oppression.”

Bobi Wine emphasized the need for collective prayer for the detainees, many of whom he claimed have been imprisoned without any communicated crimes. “As we celebrate Christmas, we have many of our friends who are in prison. We have to pray for them to keep holding on, to give them patience,” he stated. He further implored the public to pray for those responsible for their imprisonment, hoping they would find it in their hearts to release these individuals who are “rotting in prisons.”

His comments come amid ongoing criticism of the government regarding alleged arbitrary arrests and detentions of opposition members and activists, an issue that has drawn significant concern from human rights organizations. Bobi Wine’s appeal reflects a broader call for justice and human rights in Uganda, particularly as the nation approaches the 2026 general elections.

In addition to addressing the issue of political prisoners, Bobi Wine lamented the fading traditions of Christmas, urging families to focus on the spiritual significance of the holiday rather than materialism. He expressed concern over modern influences that detract from the true meaning of Christmas, calling on families to prioritize faith and community during this festive season.
