Winnie Byanyima, the UNAIDS Executive Director, has publicly cautioned Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba against continuing to make false statements about her past relationship with his father, President Yoweri Museveni. This comes after Kainerugaba, who is also a senior presidential advisor, dismissed Byanyima’s account of her relationship with Museveni, calling her story “false.”

The exchange began after a recent interview with Byanyima, where she described her past relationship with Museveni as “normal” despite its challenges, which ultimately led to their separation. She stated that the relationship was not relevant to current political discussions. However, Kainerugaba took to social media to challenge her statement, asserting that there was nothing normal about their relationship and accusing her of trying to wreck his father’s home.
Byanyima responded firmly to Kainerugaba’s remarks, stating, “I feel it’s important to be clear: There is a more complex history between your father and I that we have both chosen to move past with mutual respect.” Byanyima warned Kainerugaba that if he continued spreading a “false narrative,” she would have no option but to reveal the “hard evidence of the facts.” She also made it clear that she wished to close the matter, urging him to respect her decision.
In a separate post, Byanyima revealed that she is working on a book where she plans to discuss her past relationship with President Museveni in greater detail, responding to growing public interest in the story.
