Court Orders Mediation in Uganda Law Society Dispute.

Kampala, Uganda - A dispute within the Uganda Law Society (ULS) regarding the upcoming Extra Ordinary General Meeting has been directed into mediation by Justice Musa Ssekaana. This decision follows a court session where ULS lawyer Jude Byamukama expressed the parties' desire to settle their differences amicably outside of court.

The conflict arose from a lawsuit filed by ULS member Hashim Mugisha Mugisha, who challenged several decisions made by the society’s leadership. Mugisha’s application calls for declarations regarding the legality of actions taken by ULS officials, including the expulsion of former President Isaac K. Ssemakadde and Vice President Asiimwe Anthony.

During the court proceedings, Justice Ssekaana provided ample time for mediation, stating that if an agreement is not reached, he would deliver a ruling on December 13, 2024, before midnight. The judge emphasized that he had sufficient evidence from both sides to make an informed decision.

Mugisha’s concerns center around allegations that the ULS leadership acted beyond their authority and failed to account for group resources. As tensions rise within the society, this mediation effort aims to resolve internal conflicts and restore stability ahead of the scheduled meeting on December 17, 2024.
