In a major joint operation, Uganda’s Defence Intelligence and Security (DIS) agency has partnered with police to track down a well-coordinated gang that executed a daring daytime robbery in Kampala. The thieves made off with Sh100 million from businessman Fred Tibamanya, 49, who had withdrawn the money from Centenary Bank’s Kawempe branch on Friday.
The brazen theft occurred near Maganjo as Tibamanya navigated traffic. Three motorcycle-riding thugs armed with machetes surrounded his vehicle, smashed a window, and snatched a bag containing the money before speeding away into Kampala’s congested streets. The rapid execution of the crime, captured on CCTV, suggests a highly organized operation.
Speaking to investigators at Kampala North Regional Police headquarters, Tibamanya recounted how the robbers had been tailing him since he left the bank. “They saw me withdraw the money and followed me. They waited for the perfect moment to strike,” he said.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed the incident. “The criminals abandoned the bag after removing the money but left the victim’s personal documents, including land titles,” he revealed. Onyango noted that intelligence from DIS operatives is critical in tracking the gang’s movements.
The use of motorcycles in robberies has become a growing concern. Recent incidents, including the robbery of Sh30 million from businessman Francis Mubarak, highlight the sophistication of these gangs. Authorities are now considering enhanced surveillance around financial institutions and stricter monitoring of motorcycle activity in traffic hotspots.
As Tibamanya hopes for justice, the collaboration between DIS and police sends a strong message of zero tolerance for organized crime. Authorities are urging vigilance among the public and business community to curb similar incidents.
