Kampala, Uganda – In a significant move towards modernizing vehicle registration, the Ugandan government has mandated a transition to digital number plates within two years. This initiative is part of the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS) aimed at improving traffic management and enhancing national security.
Susan Kataike from the Ministry of Works and Transport announced that the rollout began in November 2023 with government vehicles, resulting in over 2,143 vehicles already fitted with digital plates. The program expanded in November 2024 to include newly registered motorcycles, with a total of 11,721 motorcycles now equipped.
From January 6, 2025, all new motor vehicles entering Uganda must have digital number plates installed for Shs700,000. Existing vehicle owners will also need to replace their old plates at fees of Shs50,000 for motorcycles and Shs150,000 for motor vehicles. Kataike encouraged vehicle owners to start preparing financially for this transition.
The ITMS project promises advanced features such as real-time tracking and violation detection capabilities through integration with security cameras. The implementation is being overseen by Virtus Global Security Ltd in collaboration with relevant ministries.
