DP President Norbert Mao Clarifies Party’s Stance on NRM Cooperation.

Kampala, Uganda – Norbert Mao, President General of the Democratic Party (DP), has firmly stated that the party is not merging with the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and emphasized its commitment to maintaining independence while cooperating with the ruling party. During a press briefing in Kampala, Mao outlined DP’s strategy for leadership and its preparations for the upcoming 2026 general elections.

Mao articulated that DP is not an NGO and that those aspiring to lead must possess the willingness, interest, and capability to run for president of Uganda. He asserted that the party president is automatically the flag bearer in national presidential races, underscoring the need for capable leaders who can represent the party effectively.

“Cooperation does not mean abandoning our principles,” Mao explained, clarifying that DP’s relationship with NRM is akin to a joint venture rather than a merger. He expressed confidence in DP’s foundational role in Uganda’s political history and its commitment to national dialogue, peaceful transition, and constitutional reform.

As the party gears up for the 2025 election season, Mao highlighted the importance of identifying dedicated members who align with DP’s values. He warned against political opportunism during election periods, stressing the need for a clear distinction between true party believers and mere supporters.
