Kampala, Uganda – The Electoral Commission (EC) of Uganda has firmly refuted rumors suggesting that financial constraints would hinder the upcoming voter registration exercise. This clarification comes in light of the commission’s recent decision to extend the timeline for updating the national voters’ register ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Spokesperson Mr. Julius Mucunguzi addressed concerns on Tuesday, stating that the decision to push back the registration dates was not related to funding gaps. Initially scheduled from January 3 to January 24, 2025, the registration exercise has now been rescheduled to run from January 20 to February 10, 2025. Mucunguzi emphasized that the extension is a strategic move aimed at enhancing logistical and operational efficiency.
“Extending the registration exercise will not affect our budgetary provisions. We have sufficient funds and all the necessary resources to ensure a smooth and effective process,” he assured. The EC’s commitment to carrying out the voter registration exercise without interruptions aims to reassure the public of their preparedness.
The adjustment in schedule had sparked speculation about potential financial issues, particularly following opposition from some Members of Parliament who advocated for an extension to align with nomination timelines. However, Mucunguzi clarified that this decision was made to allow political parties and stakeholders additional time to prepare for the exercise.
As preparations continue, the EC remains focused on ensuring that all eligible voters can participate in the electoral process effectively. With these reassurances, citizens are encouraged to prepare for the upcoming voter registration exercise confidently.
