The Electoral Commission of Uganda has issued a stern warning to politicians against manipulating the voter registration process by falsely declaring opponents as deceased or relocated. This warning comes ahead of the voter registration exercise scheduled for January 20 to February 10, 2025, which aims to update the national voters’ register in preparation for the 2026 general elections.

Jonathan Kimanje, an election officer at the Electoral Commission, emphasized the importance of transparency and honesty during the registration process. He highlighted that while the law allows voters to register in their current place of residence, some politicians exploit this provision to disenfranchise opponents. The EC has assured that there will be a rectification period following the display of the voters’ register, allowing individuals to correct any errors or omissions
