Kawempe North politics has taken an intriguing turn following the entry of Twayira Akandiida, widow of the late MP Muhammad Ssegirinya, into the race for the constituency’s parliamentary seat. Her bid has created a family divide, with her candidacy competing against the previously endorsed choice, Alex Luwemba, Ssegirinya’s long-time personal aide.
Akandiida’s decision to run highlights her determination to continue the work of her late husband. “Serving alongside him taught me the value of leadership and resilience. I am ready to champion the causes that mattered to him,” she told reporters.
Her candidacy, however, faces opposition within the family. Ssegirinya’s mother, Justin Nakajumba, has been vocal in her support for Luwemba, describing him as a trusted ally of her son. “Alex was always by his side. We need someone who knows the people’s needs and can lead with the same passion,” Nakajumba said.
NUP’s nomination process will be closely watched as additional candidates, including Magala Umar and lawyer Luyimbazi Nalukoola, vie for the ticket. With multiple strong contenders, the Kawempe North race promises intense competition and significant public interest.
