Arua, Uganda – Arua City may be on the brink of a new political dawn as Alionzi Lawrence Dangote, former Makerere University 88th Guild President and a trailblazer of student leadership, officially expressed interest in the Arua City Mayoral race.

Best remembered as the 88th Guild President of Makerere University, Alionzi rose to national prominence after clinching a landslide victory under the National Unity Platform (NUP), garnering 5,839 votes against contenders from the NRM and FDC. Despite a shortened term due to prior election delays, his impact was bold—championing student rights, advocating for suspended students, and pushing for structural reforms in student governance.

Now, with his eyes set on the transformation of his hometown, Alionzi has taken to social media with a rallying cry: “ARUA CITY, LE’DIYO” He believes Arua deserves visionary leadership—one that is inclusive, youthful, and unafraid to address deep-rooted challenges.

“We can’t build a modern city on a foundation of filth,” Alionzi stated, referring to Arua’s persisting garbage crisis. Unlike others who merely criticize, he offers solutions rooted in both policy and action, calling for sustainable waste management and civic re-education.
Born in Orivu village, Arua City, to the late Moses Mundwa and Andiru Night, Alionzi’s story is one of perseverance. From walking barefoot to Ediofe Boys Primary School to securing scholarships through merit, and later joining Makerere University on government sponsorship, his journey reflects the very resilience he seeks to instill in Arua’s next chapter.

With a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and a legacy of student-led transformation, Alionzi Lawrence now brings his energetic leadership back home—aiming to engineer a cleaner, smarter, and people-first Arua City.
