General Muhoozi Kainerugaba Meets Japan’s Military Chief of Staff.

Tokyo, Japan - In a historic visit, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), met with General Yoshihide Yoshida, Chief of Staff of the Japan Self-Defence Force. This meeting, held at the Ministry of Defence Headquarters in Ichigaya, Tokyo, marks the first official visit to Japan by a Ugandan CDF and has been warmly welcomed by Japanese officials.

The discussions focused on enhancing military cooperation and strengthening defense relations between Uganda and Japan. This visit symbolizes a new phase of collaboration between the two nations, reflecting their commitment to mutual support in security matters. General Kainerugaba’s visit follows a prior meeting with Japan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Fujii Hisayuki, where both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to bolstering bilateral relations.

During the meeting, General Kainerugaba expressed gratitude for Japan’s ongoing support in various sectors, including infrastructure development and education. The Japanese officials highlighted their intent to deepen cooperation ahead of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), scheduled for August 2025. The discussions also touched on regional security issues, with both leaders exchanging views on promoting peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.
