In a significant move to support victims of the August 2024 Kiteezi tragedy, the Government of Uganda has proposed the construction of 638 houses for survivors. The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Lands and Housing in partnership with Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), seeks to offer permanent housing solutions for those affected when a garbage dump collapsed, burying homes and killing at least 32 people.

The disaster displaced dozens of families and led to the loss of valuable property. Now, the government plans to invest Shs84 billion in constructing three-bedroom houses or Shs77 billion for two-bedroom units. Bulwadda Estates Ltd has been assigned to undertake the construction on KCCA land located in Ddundu.
Percis Namuganza, Minister of State for Housing, confirmed the project’s scope, explaining that beneficiaries will contribute to the project’s cost through deductions based on the value of their Kiteezi land holdings. Prime Minister Robinnah Nabbanja has advised further consultations and directed the Ministry and KCCA to submit a comprehensive plan for Cabinet review to ensure the project’s effectiveness and sustainability.
This initiative marks a long-term commitment to providing secure housing for disaster victims while addressing housing shortages in Kampala.
