Kampala, Uganda – The Ugandan government has officially dismissed rumors circulating on social media regarding the appointment of Hon. Justice Yorokamu Bamwine as the new Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, with Hon. Syda Bbumba as Deputy Chairperson. The clarification came from Haji Faruk Kirunda, Special Presidential Assistant on Press and Mobilization, who urged the public to disregard the false information.
The rumors gained traction after a post by Ian Ndamwesiga on X (formerly Twitter), which claimed that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni had made these appointments pending parliamentary confirmation. However, Haji Kirunda emphasized that such claims are unfounded and should be treated with contempt.
“The General Public is called upon to regard as FAKE NEWS the social media story indicating that H.E @KagutaMuseveni has appointed Hon. Justice Yorokamu Bamwine to head the Electoral Commission,” Kirunda stated on his official X account. He assured citizens that any official appointments would be communicated through proper channels.
Currently, the Electoral Commission is led by Justice Simon Byabakama as Chairperson and Hajjat Aisha Lubega as Deputy Chairperson. The government’s swift response highlights its commitment to countering misinformation and maintaining transparency in governance.
