High Court Blocks Uganda Law Society’s Extraordinary General Meeting and Elections.

Mugisha’s application named ULS and several other lawyers as respondents, including those campaigning for various elective positions. He argued that the decisions made by the ULS Council were ultra vires (beyond their powers) and procedurally improper. Specifically, he sought declarations that the expulsions of former President Isaac K. Ssemakadde and Vice President Asiimwe Anthony were illegal, as well as a review of the council’s decisions made on November 24, 2024.

In his ruling, Justice Ssekaana granted a temporary injunction restraining ULS from implementing the council’s decisions and convening any meetings until the main case is resolved. He emphasized that maintaining the status quo was essential to ensure fairness and justice, particularly given the serious implications of suspending key council members.

The decision highlights ongoing internal conflicts within ULS, with accusations of leadership acting against the society’s charter. As the legal community awaits further developments, this ruling underscores the complexities surrounding governance within professional associations in Uganda.
