Kalifah Aganaga, the famous Ugandan dancehall singer, has officially declared his political ambitions by joining the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and picking up his membership card ahead of a potential run for the Kawempe North Parliamentary seat. This announcement comes after the sudden death of the former Kawempe North MP, Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, in January 2025. Aganaga, whose real name is Mukiibi Sadat, aims to succeed Ssegirinya and represent the constituency in Parliament.

The news of Aganaga’s candidacy was first teased by FDC’s official social media accounts, which posted a preview of his popular song “Ndabirawa.” The teaser sparked conversations among his fans and political observers, who speculated that the artist was preparing to enter politics under the FDC banner. The speculation was confirmed today when Aganaga was unveiled at the FDC offices in Namasuba, where he officially became a member of the party.
Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya’s death has left a void in the Kawempe North constituency, and Aganaga’s decision to run for office is part of a growing trend where public figures and entertainers are venturing into politics in Uganda. The late MP, who had been hospitalized for several months due to health complications, was widely respected for his work in the community. Following his death, his family chose Alex Luwemba, his personal assistant, as their preferred candidate to replace him. However, with Aganaga now in the race, the competition is expected to intensify, particularly as he is set to face off with candidates, including one of Ssegirinya’s widows, who are vying for the same seat.
Kalifah Aganaga, known for his music career and business ventures, now faces the challenge of making a successful transition into the political sphere. His popularity as an artist, combined with his commitment to community welfare, may play a pivotal role in the upcoming race for the Kawempe North MP seat.
