Nairobi, Kenya – The Kenyan Air Force has officially received its first shipment of Bayraktar TB2 drones from Turkish defense manufacturer Baykar Defence, marking a significant enhancement to the country’s military capabilities. This acquisition includes at least six advanced drones, with personnel having completed training earlier this year in Turkey.
The Bayraktar TB2, known for its combat effectiveness, has gained international recognition for its performance in various conflicts, including the Azerbaijan-Armenia war over Nagorno-Karabakh and Libya’s civil war. With a flight endurance of up to 27 hours and the ability to carry lightweight, laser-guided bombs, these drones are seen as game-changers in modern warfare.

Kenyan officials have indicated that the drones will be utilized to enhance surveillance and strengthen counterinsurgency efforts, particularly against the Al Shabaab terrorist group operating in neighboring Somalia. The successful integration of these UAVs into Kenya’s military strategy underscores the growing trend among African nations investing in Turkish drone technology to bolster their defense capabilities.
The acquisition reflects a broader movement within Africa, where countries like Niger, Togo, and Ethiopia are also turning to the Bayraktar TB2 to address security challenges. With a relatively low cost estimated between $2 million and $5 million per unit, these drones provide an affordable means for nations with limited budgets to achieve significant air power.
