Man Killed in Kabale Over Alleged Theft of Cocks.

Kabale, Uganda – A tragic incident occurred on Christmas Eve in Kyembeho village, Kaharo Sub County, where a man was killed after allegedly stealing two cocks from a local farmer. The victim, identified as Tumwesigye Deus, 38, was reportedly caught in the act by the owner of the cocks, Byaruhanga Alex, around 4:00 AM on December 24, 2024.

According to eyewitness accounts, Byaruhanga spotted Tumwesigye through his window and immediately rushed outside to confront him. With the help of other villagers, they apprehended Tumwesigye, leading to a violent altercation. Reports indicate that a mob, including Byaruhanga and another individual named Nasasira Osbert, attacked Tumwesigye, resulting in his death.

Authorities were alerted to the scene, and the District Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officer arrived promptly to gather witness statements and retrieve the body for examination. A post-mortem was conducted to determine the cause of death. However, several suspects involved in the attack remain at large.

In connection with the incident, two individuals have been arrested: Kanyankole Venansio, the local LC1 chairperson, and Kesande Fausat, the sister of the deceased. The Kigezi region police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed that efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects and ensure justice is served.

This incident highlights ongoing issues related to vigilantism and mob justice in rural communities, where allegations of theft can lead to severe consequences. The police have urged residents to report crimes to authorities rather than take matters into their own hands.
