Mbarara, Uganda – The renovation of Katete Bridge in Mbarara City, a vital transportation link for the region, is set to be completed by January 1, 2025, just in time for the New Year. Initially expected to be finished before Christmas, the project has faced delays but is now nearing completion, with city officials optimistic about meeting the revised deadline.
The Shs366 million project, which began on December 6, is being executed by the UPDF Engineering Brigade and was reported to be 60% complete by Christmas Day. City Mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi expressed confidence in the ongoing work, stating, “I hope that the remaining work to be done is way smaller than what has been done. In a very short time, after rectifying the small issues and putting up all the timber and other machinery and equipment, people will freely use the bridge.”

The timely completion of Katete Bridge is crucial for local transportation and trade, making it a top priority for city officials. William Bananuka, Mbarara City Engineer, confirmed that the remaining tasks are manageable within the given timeframe. “They are remaining with a few timber to complete this and add iron sheets. We hope by January 1 next year this work will be done,” he explained.
As residents eagerly anticipate the bridge’s reopening, its completion promises to restore smooth traffic flow and bolster local commerce in Mbarara.
