Singer Michael Mukwaya, popularly known as Mikie Wine and younger brother to NUP leader Bobi Wine, has publicly declared he will not contest for any political position in Uganda’s 2026 general elections. Despite his close association with the National Unity Platform (NUP) and his family’s deep political roots, Mikie Wine emphasized that his focus remains firmly on his music career.

Speaking to media, Mikie Wine explained, “I do not need a political office to speak out or advise. You can correct the wrongs from where you are.” He noted that his voice and influence as an artist are powerful tools for effecting positive change in society, a role he has always embraced. While he doesn’t entirely rule out future political ambitions, he insists, “We will cross the bridge when we reach it. For now, I’m focused on music.”
Mikie Wine’s statement comes amid speculation about his political intentions, given his brother Bobi Wine’s transformation from a music icon to a prominent political figure. Mikie, however, has charted his own path, building a successful music career and leading the Sulubada High School music group8. He credits both Bobi Wine and their brother Eddy Yawe for inspiring and nurturing his musical journey
