NUP Demands Inclusion in IPOD Meetings Following Loss of Shs800 Million Funding.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has formally requested the Electoral Commission to include it in Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD) meetings, marking a notable policy shift after years of boycotting the platform. In a letter dated September 17, 2025, NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya accused the government of illegal exclusion from dialogue forums related to the Political Parties and Organisations Act and the National Consultative Forum (NCF).

The letter, copied to key government officials, asserts that excluding NUP undermines the legality of decisions made without its participation. This demand comes after the 2025 amendment tying political party funding, totaling Shs3.1 billion, to IPOD participation. Previously, NUP received Shs800 million annually without joining IPOD, but the new law threatens financial sanctions against non-participating parties ahead of the 2026 elections.
