Police Summons Former Leadership of Juma Zukuli Muslim Group Over Allegations.

Kampala, Uganda - The Criminal Investigation Directorate (CID) of the Kampala Metropolitan Police has summoned the former leadership of the Juma Zukuli Muslim Group in connection with serious allegations, including forgery, unlawful disposal of trustee property, and misappropriation of approximately UGX 5 billion. The summons targets key figures within the group, including Sheikh Muhammad Abdunoor Lunanoba, the former president general, and other prominent leaders such as Jamal Sebuta Malende and Hajji Mawazi Lulagala.

According to a summons dated December 9, 2024, signed by KMP CID Commander Henry Mugumya, the leaders are required to appear at the KMP CID Headquarters in Kampala on December 12, 2024. The investigation stems from allegations that the former leadership mismanaged trustee funds and engaged in fraudulent activities dating back to 2001.

The troubles for Juma Zukuli began in March 2023 when a faction of followers petitioned the High Court to challenge Sheikh Lunanoba’s leadership. They accused him and Malende of illegally occupying their positions beyond their term, which they claimed expired in November 2022. In response, the court ordered a temporary leadership change to facilitate a general assembly and necessary constitutional amendments.

As the police investigation unfolds, it highlights ongoing tensions within the Juma Zukuli Muslim Group and raises questions about accountability and governance within religious organizations in Uganda.
