Serere, Uganda – The political landscape in Serere District is becoming increasingly competitive as four women vie for the Woman Member of Parliament seat in the 2026 elections. The incumbent, Helen Adoa Abeku, who is also the Minister of State for Fisheries, faces a strong challenge from Esther Acom, known as Ajokotau, among others.

Acom, a professional accountant from Kateta Sub-County, is gaining attention for her focus on improving women’s livelihoods, health, and unity in the district. Her candidacy declaration at a funeral in Kangodo Cell has energized her supporters.
Other candidates, including Margaret Opol and Florence Iyogil, are also seeking the NRM flag, making the race highly competitive. Abeku, who has been in Parliament for ten years, is recognized for her leadership and contributions to education and community transformation.
