Over four months of data collection, the survey engaged with 180 SME owners to understand their views on various aspects affecting their businesses. According to Sam Barata, General Manager at Nation Media Group, this survey marks a significant milestone in recognizing the contributions of SMEs to Uganda’s economic landscape over the past 16 years.

Key highlights from the survey include an increase in active management among business owners, with 81% now involved in daily operations. Additionally, while start-up capital primarily comes from founders’ savings (72%), bank loans remain a critical source for expansion funding (56%). However, challenges such as inflation and delayed customer payments continue to hinder growth.
The upcoming gala dinner will celebrate these achievements and recognize SMEs that have demonstrated excellence and resilience in contributing to Uganda’s economic growth.
