Ugandan Government to Withdraw Licenses for Promoters of “Vulgar” Music.

Kampala, Uganda – The Ugandan government has issued a stern warning to promoters, event organizers, and managers of musicians known for “vulgar” music, threatening to withdraw their licenses if they continue to promote such content. This announcement was made by the Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, Betty Amongi, as the country gears up for the festive season when entertainment activities peak.

During a press briefing on December 25, 2024, Amongi expressed concern over the increasing prevalence of obscene and immoral acts during performances. “We are experiencing unprecedented obscenity and vulgar language,” she stated, emphasizing the need for regulation during a time when families attend events together. She urged event organizers to cooperate with security personnel and local leaders to ensure that performances align with societal norms.

The warning follows directives from the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), which recently suspended the airing of several songs deemed sexually explicit, including tracks by popular artists like Lil Pazo and Gravity Omutuju. These actions are in line with the Uganda Communications Act 2013, which prohibits broadcasting material containing profanity or sexually explicit content.

Amongi’s remarks highlight a broader effort by the government to maintain moral standards in the entertainment industry. As Ugandans prepare for various celebrations, the Minister’s call for vigilance underscores the importance of protecting community values and ensuring that entertainment remains family-friendly.
