Ugandan MPs Face Criticism for Lack of Public Engagement, Survey Reveals.

A recent survey by Twaweza-Uganda has uncovered significant dissatisfaction among Ugandan citizens regarding their Members of Parliament (MPs). The 2024 Sauti za Wananchi report reveals that a staggering 86% of Ugandans claim their MP has never held a public meeting for feedback or consultation. This finding highlights a critical gap in communication between elected officials and their constituents.

Marie Nanyanzi, Senior Programs Officer at Twaweza Uganda, noted that 77% of citizens remember their MPs’ campaign promises, yet 45% report that key promises remain unfulfilled. These unmet commitments include infrastructure developments such as roads, schools, health facilities, and electricity. The survey results indicate a growing disconnect between MPs and their constituents, raising questions about the effectiveness of current parliamentary representation and the need for improved communication strategies.
