Kampala, Uganda – The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has announced plans to make consultative visits to key figures in the legal and political spheres regarding the arrest of its member, Eron Kiiza. ULS President Isaac Ssemakadde stated that delegations will meet with Chief Justice Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny-Dollo, Martha Karua, and Erias Lukwago.
The visit to the Chief Justice aims to discuss the expeditious delivery of the Supreme Court’s judgment in the case of Attorney General vs. Michael Kabaziguruka, which has implications for military courts’ jurisdiction over civilians. Ssemakadde emphasized that while ULS respects the autonomy of its members, Kiiza’s case is of significant public interest due to its broader implications for the administration of justice in Uganda.

Kiiza was sentenced to nine months in prison by the Makindye Court Martial for contempt of court, a ruling that has been criticized as unlawful and a threat to the legal profession. The ULS will issue a comprehensive statement after these consultations.
