The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) have officially announced the adoption of a Forward Defensive Posture in the North Kivu region of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This strategic shift aims to address the escalating security threats posed by armed groups, particularly the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), amid ongoing conflicts in the area.

Acting Maj Gen Felix Kulayigye, the UPDF Defence spokesperson, explained that this posture involves implementing active defense measures, including foot and motorized patrols, enhanced surveillance for early threat detection, and laying ambushes. The UPDF is also prepared to conduct limited offensive actions if necessary. “The aim is to deter and deny the enemy freedom of action in the specified area of operation and interest,” he stated.
The decision comes in response to a worsening security situation following significant fighting between M23 Movement forces and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC). The UPDF has been actively engaged in operations against extremist groups like the ADF since launching Operation Shujaa in November 2021, which has reportedly degraded their capabilities.
