In an exclusive interview with a local television station, Vinka emphasized the importance of understanding the legalities involved before committing to a record label. “Read your contracts very well and make use of lawyers,” she advised, underscoring the significance of ensuring that the terms of an agreement are in line with an artist’s interests. She highlighted that rushing to sign a contract without thoroughly understanding its terms can lead to unintended consequences, including unfair compensation and restrictive clauses.
Vinka’s advice is grounded in her experience working with two reputable labels in both the global and local markets. Her affiliation with Sony Music, one of the largest record labels in the world, alongside Swangz Avenue, the most prominent music label in Uganda, has provided her with valuable insight into how the music industry operates. However, she strongly advocates for negotiating terms that benefit both the artist and the label. “Understand your contract and don’t be in a rush to sign,” Vinka added.
