Duma Boko, 54, was inaugurated as Botswana's new president on Friday, marking a significant shift in the country's political landscape. Boko’s inauguration signifies the end of the BDP’s nearly 60-year rule, which had been in place since Botswana’s independence from the United Kingdom in 1966. The UDC won 36 seats in parliament compared to the BDP’s mere four seats, representing a dramatic reversal of political fortunes.

In his inaugural speech, Boko emphasized the strength of Botswana’s democracy and pledged to usher in a new political dawn. He also praised former President Mokgweetsi Masisi’s statesmanship in conceding defeat, highlighting the peaceful transition of power. As Boko takes office, he faces challenges including diversifying the economy beyond its reliance on diamond exports and addressing unemployment concerns.
