ICC Calls for Hearing in Absentia for Joseph Kony Amid Ongoing Pursuit of Justice.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has emphasized its commitment to ensuring justice for victims of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), including the possibility of holding a hearing in absentia for fugitive leader Joseph Kony. This announcement comes as ICC officials visit Uganda to discuss ongoing efforts to address the atrocities committed by the LRA, which has left a devastating impact on countless lives.

Dahirou Sant-Anna, International Cooperation Advisor from the Office of the Prosecutor, highlighted that the ICC’s mission is to hold perpetrators accountable and provide justice to victims. “This is not just a responsibility of the Court, but of all nations, including Uganda,” Sant-Anna stated, underscoring the importance of state cooperation in enforcing ICC arrest warrants.

The discussion surrounding Kony’s potential trial in absentia arises from his continued evasion of capture, despite an arrest warrant issued by the ICC in 2005. Sant-Anna noted, “The ICC cannot wait indefinitely for Kony to be captured. If he continues to evade arrest, we must proceed with what is available.” This approach aims to ensure that justice is not delayed for victims who have suffered greatly due to Kony’s actions.

The LRA’s brutal insurgency has resulted in widespread human rights violations, including mass killings and child conscription. The ICC remains dedicated to pursuing justice for these victims and is prepared to move forward with proceedings even if Kony remains at large.
