The pardoned individuals faced serious charges including treachery and unlawful possession of ammunition. Among them is Olivia Lutaaya, a mother of two, who was arrested in 2021 at her home in Namuwongo and detained for weeks before being charged before a military court. The other members on the pardon list include prominent figures such as Rashid Sseggujja, Robert Rugumayo, and Muhuyadin Kakoza.
These individuals were convicted last month after entering a plea bargain, which resulted in prison sentences of three months and 22 days. State Minister for Youth Balaam Barugahara expressed gratitude for the President’s decision, stating, “Your compassionate decision gives them a second chance at life.” He also emphasized ongoing efforts to secure clemency for other political prisoners.
As Uganda continues to grapple with political tensions, this pardon raises questions about the government’s approach to dissent and the treatment of opposition members. The NUP has been vocal about their concerns regarding political persecution and the use of military courts for civilians.
