US Ambassador Calls for Dialogue Ahead of 2026 General Elections in Uganda.

Kampala, Uganda - During a recent human rights convention held at the Sheraton Hotel in Kampala, William Popp, the United States Ambassador to Uganda, emphasized the importance of dialogue as Uganda prepares for the upcoming 2026 general elections. The event, organized by Chapter Four—a human rights NGO—with support from USAID and the East-West Management Institute, provided a platform for discussions on human rights and democratic governance.

Ambassador Popp urged Ugandans to come together to foster open dialogues that are essential for building a peaceful and stable nation. “As we look towards 2026, it is crucial to support these conversations that contribute to a prosperous country,” he stated. His remarks come at a time when political tensions are high, and many citizens are concerned about the electoral process.

The ambassador also welcomed commitments from the Ugandan government and various stakeholders to resolve differences through peaceful dialogue rather than confrontation. He highlighted the need for the government to uphold citizens’ constitutional rights, including freedom of assembly and expression. “A free and independent media is vital for democracy,” Popp added, underscoring the role of journalists in disseminating information without fear.

Moreover, he denounced the trial of civilians in military courts, calling it an unfair practice that undermines justice. This issue has been contentious in Uganda, with ongoing debates about the constitutionality of such trials. Popp’s statements resonate with many Ugandans who are advocating for a more transparent and accountable governance system as the nation approaches its next elections.
