Bugisu Cooperative Union Demands Urgent Government Response to Landslide Threats.

Mbale, Uganda - In light of recent devastating landslides that resulted in over 20 fatalities in the Bugisu region, the Bugisu Cooperative Union (BCU) is calling on the Ugandan government to take immediate action. The landslides occurred across several districts including Bududa, Bulambuli, Sironko, and Namisindwa, prompting urgent pleas from local leaders for effective disaster management strategies.

John Musila, BCU Vice Chairperson and MP for Bubulo East, expressed deep concern over the recurring nature of these tragedies. “It is unacceptable that our people continue to perish due to landslides year after year,” he stated. Musila highlighted that while there were intentions to relocate over 7,200 families from high-risk areas to Bunambutye, progress has been disappointingly slow.

He criticized past government resettlement programs as ineffective and called for a robust plan to ensure all at-risk individuals are moved to safety. “Without serious intervention from the government, we will keep witnessing these tragic losses,” he warned.

In a related development, Prime Minister Robina Nabbanja accused regional political leaders of politicizing relocation efforts by claiming that Bunambutye is uninhabitable. As recovery efforts continue with bodies being recovered from the rubble, BCU’s demands emphasize an urgent need for coordinated disaster response initiatives in Uganda’s vulnerable regions.
