The operations in Kira municipality resulted in the arrest of 38 suspects, with police focusing on areas such as Kireka railway zone, Bweyogerere central zone, and Namugongo. In Mukono, 25 individuals were apprehended in Kauga and Nantabulirwa. According to Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, many of those arrested were found in possession of marijuana, highlighting the ongoing issue of drug use among criminal elements.
Onyango explained that these operations were initiated in response to community concerns about criminal gangs that often gather to consume narcotics before committing crimes against pedestrians and businesses. “Several operations were conducted around the country against suspected criminal gangs in a bid to disrupt their operations as we head towards the festive season,” he stated.
In Nakawa Division, police arrested 40 suspects from areas like Katumba Zone and Kyanja Central Zone. The operations targeted specific bars and brothels known for selling marijuana, responding to community complaints about illegal activities.
Additionally, operations extended beyond Kampala metropolitan areas to Iganga town, where 23 suspects were arrested, and Bugiri municipality, where another 30 individuals were apprehended. The coordinated efforts reflect a proactive approach by law enforcement agencies to maintain peace during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
