Butabika Hospital Reports Alarming Surge in Youth Mental Health Cases.

Kampala, Uganda - Butabika Mental Psychiatric Hospital has raised concerns over a significant increase in mental health issues among young people, particularly those under the age of 17. According to Dr. Juliet Nakku, the Executive Director of the hospital, the facility, originally designed to accommodate 550 patients, is now overwhelmed with over 10,300 admissions, reflecting a troubling trend in mental health crises among children and adolescents.

Dr. Nakku noted that prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, patient admissions were consistently below 900. However, since the pandemic, there has been a dramatic rise in cases, with current numbers exceeding 10,000. “Children under 18 are increasingly struggling with mental health issues driven by anxiety, depression, and excessive alcohol use,” she stated. This alarming trend has prompted calls for increased public awareness campaigns about the dangers of substance abuse among youth.

The recent 5th annual Butabika Christmas Festival highlighted the need for support and care for patients at the hospital. Organized by Soul Foundation Uganda, the event provided festive meals for patients and aimed to foster a sense of community and support during the holiday season. Geraldine Ssali, Executive Director of Soul Foundation, emphasized the importance of breaking down the stigma surrounding mental illness and promoting mental health awareness.

As Uganda grapples with rising mental health challenges among its youth, experts urge the government to take proactive measures to address these issues and improve access to mental health services.
