Michael Niyitegeka, Executive Director at Refactory, highlighted the need for broader access to technology skills beyond traditional educational systems. He stated, “Tech shouldn’t be a reserve for only a select group of people who have learned it in a mainstream setup.” His comments reflect an increasing awareness of the importance of inclusivity in tech training initiatives.
In addition, Nesta Paul Katende, CEO of the Otic Foundation, suggested conducting an AI readiness survey to assess Uganda’s ability to integrate AI into its socio-economic framework effectively. He warned that without proper preparation and awareness, there is a risk of widening inequality gaps rather than bridging them. “AI presents immense opportunities,” Katende noted.
The forum aimed to inform Uganda’s future AI strategy and promote sustainable digital transformation by engaging industry leaders and policymakers in meaningful dialogue. As Uganda continues its journey toward embracing digital technologies, experts emphasize that thoughtful and context-aware strategies are crucial for maximizing benefits while minimizing potential drawbacks.
