Eddy Kenzo Announces Progress on Copyright and Neighbouring Rights (Amendment) Bill 2024

“I’m glad to inform you that the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights (Amendment) Bill, 2024, was returned from the Parliamentary Counsel and has been approved and overwhelmingly supported by Cabinet today,” Kenzo announced. This development marks a significant step forward in protecting the rights of artists and ensuring fair compensation for their work in Uganda’s creative industry.

The next phase in the legislative process involves the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs publishing the bill in the Gazette and introducing it to Parliament for debate and enactment. Additionally, the Ministry of Finance has issued a Certificate of Financial Implication to expedite this process, indicating strong governmental support for the initiative.

Kenzo expressed optimism that this new legislation could serve as a “Christmas gift” for Ugandan creatives. “Our wish of having the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights (Amendment) Bill, 2024, as a Christmas gift has been fulfilled,” he stated, thanking supporters for their encouragement and prayers throughout this journey.
