The training program seeks to reskill drivers and boda boda riders in defensive driving techniques, focusing on safe vehicle operation to mitigate risks associated with human error, environmental conditions, and the actions of other road users. According to the 2023 Annual Police Crime Report, Uganda has seen an alarming average of 13 road crash fatalities daily, highlighting the urgent need for improved driving practices.

Valery Okecho, Corporate Communications Manager at Vivo Energy Uganda, emphasized the importance of behavior change among road users. He stated, “A greater percentage of road crashes globally are attributable to human error. With the right interventions, such as these training workshops, we can significantly reduce the toll of road crashes.”
The reliance on public transport underscores the necessity of this program. Vulnerable groups like pedestrians and motorcyclists are particularly affected by road accidents, constituting 36% and 33% of fatalities respectively. The initiative aims to address these issues head-on by equipping drivers with essential skills to navigate Uganda’s roads safely.
