Vatican City – On Christmas Eve, Pope Francis delivered a heartfelt message during the solemn Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, emphasizing the importance of hope and courage in the face of adversity. Celebrating his twelfth Christmas as pontiff, Francis reflected on the significance of Jesus’ birth as a poor carpenter’s son, urging believers to recognize their potential to effect change in the world.
In his sermon, the Pope stated that hope is a call to action, encouraging individuals not to succumb to complacency or mediocrity. “Hope calls us … to be upset with things that are wrong and to find the courage to change them,” he proclaimed. This message aligns with the theme of the upcoming 2025 Catholic Holy Year, which aims to inspire spiritual renewal and commitment to transforming society.

The Holy Year, which is expected to attract approximately 32 million tourists to Rome, officially commenced with the opening of a special bronze-paneled “Holy Door” at St. Peter’s Basilica—a symbolic act reserved for Jubilee years. Pilgrims who walk through this door will have the opportunity to receive special indulgences, reinforcing the significance of this period for Catholics worldwide.

Pope Francis also reiterated his call for developed nations to alleviate the debt burden faced by low-income countries during this Jubilee year. “The Jubilee calls us to spiritual renewal and commits us to the transformation of our world,” he stated, highlighting the need for compassion and support for those in need.
As he prepares for his Christmas Day “Urbi et Orbi” message, Pope Francis remains focused on promoting messages of peace, hope, and solidarity among all people.
