Kampala, Uganda – In a heartfelt address during Christmas celebrations at St. Mary’s Cathedral Rubaga, Dr. Chrysestom Muyingo, the Minister of State for Higher Education, has called on parents to take proactive measures to shield their children from negative influences during the festive season. His remarks come amid growing concerns over school dropouts and moral decay among the youth in Uganda.
Addressing a congregation that included notable figures such as former Buganda Prime Minister Joseph Mulwanyamuli Ssemwogerere, Dr. Muyingo emphasized the pivotal role of parenting in shaping the future of the nation. “Many children have been forced to drop out of school because of our actions as parents,” he stated, highlighting parental negligence as a significant contributor to this crisis.

The minister urged families to utilize the holiday period as an opportunity to bond with their children and instill core values such as faith, discipline, and responsibility. He encouraged parents to engage in meaningful conversations with their children about the true essence of Christmas, suggesting activities like reading the holy book together.
Dr. Muyingo also pointed out the importance of guidance and supervision during the holidays to protect children from harmful influences, including misuse of the internet, which can perpetuate negativity and misinformation. He stressed that families should engage with government development programs aimed at combating poverty and creating opportunities for the younger generation.
As the festive season unfolds, Dr. Muyingo’s call for unity and reflection resonates with many Ugandans who recognize the need for collective responsibility in nurturing a morally upright society.
