Gulu, Uganda – Former Aruu County Member of Parliament Samuel Odonga-Otto has announced his intention to reclaim his parliamentary seat in the upcoming 2026 elections, stepping back from his earlier aspirations to run for president. Odonga-Otto believes that his leadership will be more impactful within Parliament, where he feels his efforts can make a significant difference.
In an interview, Odonga-Otto stated, “Politics is God’s timing,” expressing confidence that his moment to lead will come in due course. Earlier this year, he had declared his presidential ambitions, citing concerns over corruption and the state of Uganda’s health and transport sectors. However, he has now decided to focus on regaining his position in Parliament.
During the 2021 elections, Odonga-Otto contested under the Uganda Economic Party (UEP) but lost to independent candidate Christopher Komakech, who received 9,796 votes compared to Odonga-Otto’s 6,199. Despite contesting the election results based on allegations that Komakech had not resigned from his psychiatric position at Butabika Hospital, the Court of Appeal upheld Komakech’s victory.
Supporters like Moses Odong from Pader District have expressed optimism about Odonga-Otto’s return, believing he will advocate for the oppressed and address pressing issues in the district. However, some voters are skeptical about his change of heart regarding a return to Parliament, questioning the sincerity of his political promises.
