Prominent Figures Lost in 2024: A Reflection on Their Legacies

As 2024 draws to a close, Uganda reflects on the lives of several prominent individuals who passed away this year, leaving significant impacts on their communities and the nation as a whole. This year saw the loss of influential leaders, dedicated public servants, and celebrated personalities across various fields.

Cecilia Ogwal

Cecilia Ogwal, Uganda’s first beauty queen and a long-serving legislator, died at the age of 77 in January after battling cancer. Ogwal was a respected figure in Ugandan politics, having served in Parliament since 1966. Her contributions to the political landscape and advocacy for women’s rights have left an enduring legacy.

 Tamale Mirundi

In August, Tamale Mirundi, a well-known journalist and former presidential press secretary, passed away at age 60 due to lung-related complications. Mirundi was recognized for his fearless political commentary and sharp wit, often stirring controversy with his outspoken views. His unique personality and requests for a lively send-off reflect his vibrant character.

Sarah Mateke

The political sphere also mourned the loss of Sarah Mateke, the State Minister for Defence, who died at 50 from a heart attack in September. Described as humble and dedicated, Mateke’s service to her country was marked by her commitment to her constituents.

Dr. Martin Aliker

Dr. Martin Aliker, a pioneer in dental surgery and influential businessman, passed away at 95 in April. His establishment of the first black-owned private dental practice in East Africa set a precedent for future healthcare professionals. Aliker’s contributions extended beyond dentistry; he held leadership positions in various companies and served as an advisor to President Museveni.

Rebecca Cheptegei

The year also saw the tragic death of Rebecca Cheptegei, a national record-holding marathon runner, who was killed in a petrol attack orchestrated by her estranged boyfriend. Her untimely death sparked widespread condemnation against gender-based violence in Uganda.
