Pakwach District, Uganda – President Yoweri Museveni has emphasized the importance of preserving African culture during the annual Interstate Nubian Festival held in Pakwach District. Represented by Phiona Nyamutoro, the State Minister for Energy and Mineral Development, Museveni’s message resonated with attendees from various countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Kenya, and Tanzania.

During the festival, which celebrates Nubian heritage, Nyamutoro conveyed the President’s appreciation for the Nubian community’s efforts in promoting unity and cultural preservation. “The President commended the Nubian community for fostering unity and preserving their culture, which enhances development,” she stated.

One significant highlight of the event was Uganda’s recognition of the Nubian dialect as an independent tribe. “Uganda is the only country that constitutionally recognizes the Nubian dialect as an independent tribe,” Nyamutoro noted, underscoring Uganda’s commitment to cultural diversity.

Museveni warned against cultural assimilation, stating, “We should not breed ‘Black Europeans’ for the prosperity of Africa.” His remarks reflect a broader concern regarding the preservation of cultural identities in a rapidly globalizing world.
In support of the festival, Museveni contributed Shs 85 million to ensure its successful organization. “We are grateful to the President for his cash contribution towards the successful organization of the event,” Nyamutoro said. The Interstate Nubian Festival serves as a vital platform for cultural exchange and celebration among Nubian communities.
