Kampala, Uganda – The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (UEDCL) has officially been granted the electricity distribution license to replace Umeme Ltd, effective April 1, 2025. This transition follows the expiration of Umeme’s 20-year concession in March 2025 and aligns with the government’s decision to not renew any expiring distribution licenses held by private companies.

During a recent announcement, Ruth Nankabirwa, the Minister for Energy and Mineral Development, assured Ugandans that the transition would not disrupt electricity service delivery. She emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring continuity in services while prioritizing affordability, access, quality, and reliability.
UEDCL will maintain existing tariff packages during its operations, including lifeline tariffs and time-of-use arrangements. The ministry aims for 80% electricity access within three years and 100% by 2030 as part of its Vision 2040 and National Development Plan III Electrification Strategy.
The government is also set to rehabilitate infrastructure to mitigate service interruptions and has called on citizens to protect electricity facilities and fulfill their payment obligations. Furthermore, both UEDCL and Umeme employees will have opportunities to apply for positions within the new structure, ensuring a smooth transition.
