Kampala, Uganda – The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) are grappling with the tragic suicide of Lieutenant Amon Ariho, who took his own life, leaving behind a note that criticized the leadership and management within the army’s Engineering Brigade. Lt Ariho, who had served in the UPDF since 2013, shot himself after addressing serious concerns regarding mismanagement and systemic issues he believed contributed to his despair.
In his note directed to the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Lt Ariho expressed gratitude for the CDF’s leadership but pointedly highlighted the toxic environment created by Major George Ogwang, head of the engineering brigade. He accused Ogwang of mismanagement, including arbitrarily removing engineers from their posts and failing to address financial mismanagement.
The Defence and Military spokesperson, Brigadier-General Felix Kulayigye, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are underway regarding the allegations made in Lt Ariho’s note. “We’re investigating his allegations in the suicide note,” he said, emphasizing the need for accountability within the ranks.
This incident has drawn attention to broader issues within the UPDF, as previous reports have indicated a troubling trend of suicides among military personnel. Experts suggest that inadequate mental health support and poor working conditions may contribute to such tragedies.
