Mathias Mpuuga, former Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and Nyendo-Mukungwe legislator, has openly criticized the National Unity Platform (NUP) leadership, accusing them of neglecting the late Muhammad Ssegirinya, the Kawempe North Member of Parliament, during his prolonged illness. Mpuuga, who organized a separate burial ceremony from the official one held at Ssegirinya’s parents’ home in Kaduggala, Masaka district, highlighted his personal involvement in Ssegirinya’s final months.

Speaking at Butale Playground, where a parallel send-off was held, Mpuuga recounted his frequent visits to Ssegirinya’s home and his observations of the MP’s deteriorating health. “I oftentimes visited him at his home and had conversations about his frustrations. I last visited him at the end of November last year, and I noticed that his condition had worsened,” he stated.
He revealed that Ssegirinya’s mother had alerted him in December that her son had collapsed and was unconscious, prompting his urgent transfer to Rubaga Hospital. According to Mpuuga, despite Ssegirinya’s extended hospitalization, no NUP leaders visited him. “If there is anyone from NUP who visited him at Rubaga hospital, let them come forward and tell the world,” he challenged.
