Kivumbi assumes this key leadership role following the dismissal of Mathias Mpuuga from NUP’s top leadership. Mpuuga, previously the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, parted ways with the party amid allegations related to a controversial Shs500 million service award. He has since formed a political pressure group known as the Democratic Alliance (DA).

NUP Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya, officially confirmed Kivumbi’s appointment, emphasizing the importance of consolidating the party’s leadership in Buganda. “The ball is now in your court,” Rubongoya remarked, entrusting Kivumbi with the responsibility of steering NUP’s agenda in the central region.

Kivumbi, also the Chairperson of the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee, will serve in an acting capacity until the next NUP delegates’ conference scheduled for June 2025. His appointment was approved by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

In his acceptance speech, Kivumbi reaffirmed his commitment to advancing NUP’s mission of advocating for democratic reforms and good governance. He also called for unity among members to fortify the party’s grassroots structures.
