“I Speak Because I Care”: Ykee Benda’s Fearless Stand on Uganda’s Politics.

For many Ugandan musicians, discussing politics is a risky career move, but for Ykee Benda, it is a duty. The singer-songwriter and CEO of Mpaka Records believes that artists have a responsibility to highlight social and political issues that affect their communities.

Unlike some celebrities who have distanced themselves from political discussions to maintain neutrality, Ykee Benda argues that staying silent would be a betrayal of his fans.

“What happens to others today could happen to me tomorrow. That’s why I cannot ignore the issues affecting Ugandans,” he explained in a recent interview.

His approach to politics, however, is measured and pragmatic. Instead of outrightly siding with any political faction, the “Farmer” hitmaker assesses issues based on their impact on the population. If the government introduces a positive policy, he acknowledges it. If the leadership fails, he speaks up.

This neutral yet fearless approach has earned him respect and criticism in equal measure. Some Ugandans appreciate his honesty, while others accuse him of not taking a firm enough stance. Nevertheless, Ykee Benda insists that his goal is not division but constructive dialogue.

With Uganda heading toward another election period, the singer advises citizens to vote based on principles rather than propaganda. He believes that a well-informed electorate is the key to a better Uganda for all.
